When the sun bears down in the heart of summer, lawns often suffer the consequences. Brown patches, dry soil, and slow-growing grass are common signs that the heat has taken its toll. But a well-maintained lawn doesn’t have to give in to scorching temperatures. With the right techniques and attention to detail, you can maintain a lush, green lawn even through the hottest months.

Summer lawn care requires a thoughtful approach tailored to the season’s intense conditions. Understanding how to water effectively, mow correctly, and nourish your grass at the right times can make all the difference. Whether you’re caring for a new lawn or managing one that’s been around for years, applying these methods consistently helps your lawn thrive. These tips are especially useful for homeowners committed to quality lawn maintenance in Arlington, VA, where summer heat and humidity are common challenges.

1. Water Deeply, Not Frequently

The biggest mistake homeowners make in the summer is shallow, frequent watering. This encourages weak roots and increases evaporation. Instead, water deeply, about 1 to 1.5 inches per session, two to three times per week. Early morning is the best time, ideally between 5 AM and 9 AM. This allows water to soak into the soil before the sun evaporates it, while giving blades time to dry before nightfall, which helps prevent fungal growth.

2. Adjust Mowing Height

Mowing too short in summer stresses the grass and exposes the soil to sunlight, causing moisture to evaporate faster. Raise your mower blade and keep grass around 3 to 4 inches tall during the hottest months. Taller grass shades the soil, keeps it cooler, and encourages deeper root growth. Make sure your mower blade is sharp; a dull blade tears the grass and makes it more vulnerable to disease.

3. Feed Sparingly in Summer

Avoid heavy fertilization during the peak of summer. Too much nitrogen promotes growth that the heat can’t support, leading to stress and weak roots. Instead, apply a slow-release, low-nitrogen fertilizer at the start of the season and again in early fall. Organic options like compost or seaweed-based feeds can also be helpful without overwhelming your lawn.

4. Let Clippings Work for You

Grass clippings are a natural source of nitrogen and help retain moisture. Rather than bagging them, let clippings fall back onto the lawn. This practice, known as grasscycling, breaks down quickly and returns nutrients to the soil. It’s a free and effective way to support your lawn’s health while reducing waste.

5. Keep an Eye on Soil Health

Soil is the foundation of a healthy lawn. Compacted soil makes it harder for water and air to reach the roots. If your lawn feels hard underfoot or drains poorly, consider aerating in late spring or early fall. You can also perform a simple soil test to check pH and nutrient levels. Healthy soil should be slightly acidic (around 6.0 to 7.0 pH) and rich in organic matter.

6. Manage Weeds Before They Spread

Weeds compete with grass for water and nutrients, especially in dry summer conditions. Spot treat broadleaf weeds with a targeted herbicide or remove them by hand when the soil is moist. It’s best to avoid general weed killers during extreme heat as they can damage your lawn. Regular mowing and proper fertilization also help thicken the turf, making it harder for weeds to take hold.

Keeping your lawn green during the summer heat isn’t about expensive treatments or fancy equipment; it’s about consistency, timing, and understanding what your grass needs. Proper watering, mowing with care, and feeding only when appropriate can dramatically improve how your lawn responds to hot, dry conditions. Don’t forget to support healthy soil and manage weeds before they become a bigger issue.

From Hector who came to do the appraisal to Emerson and his team who came to do the work on our yard, everyone was incredibly professional, responsive and clearly passionate about providing a good service.

After moving into our house a few years ago and trying to make up for the last decade of neglect the previous owner gave the yard we knew we need professional help. The guys at Avanza did exactly that.

Thanks again to everyone on the crew!

It was very easy to schedule an appointment for the company’s owner to come out and look at the job. I received a proposal within a couple of days, and they offered me a time frame I could work with. Since I was not available on the day the work was done, they sent me pictures, and waited for the remaining payment until I was able to check it out in person. They did a great job pulling the huge weeds and bamboo, cutting some tree branches, pruning the bushes, uncovering some steps that had gotten covered with dirt, laying new mulch, laying rocks on the path, and doing general cleanup. I got my beautiful yard back! I highly recommend Avanza Landscaping, and plan to have them come back next time I need some work done.
